Queen of the Road ~ Book Review

If you take...

...you will have more than enough memories and laughter to last several lifetimes. You'll also have enough experiences to fill a book and name it...

Author Doreen Orion and her husband are both doctors of psychiatry. Doreen had scaled her practice down so that she could work out of her house while Tim, her husband was till working 60 hours a week. His solution to his work schedule was to take a midlife break. Thus, he came up with the idea of spending a year, traveling around the USA on a converted bus. When he brought his idea to Doreen, she replied, “Why can’t you be like a normal husband in a midlife crisis and have an affair or buy a Corvette? I will never, ever, EVER live in a bus.” Obviously, he is the psychiatrist.

Queen of the Road is filled with hilarious stories. Each of the thirteen chapters starts off with a cocktail recipe which leads right into whatever escapades the bus and it's occupants participated in. For instance, Chapter 6, Southbound In The Fire Lane, begins with a recipe for a cocktail named, Fire in the Hole. Doreen then tells the tales of a fire on the bus which could have turned out much worse than it did.

Being a Road Trip junkie, I enjoyed reading about the many places the Queen of the Road visited. Almost two years ago, my husband and I traveled across the USA through 22 states. We didn't however make it to Alaska, a state I have always wanted to tour. Reading about Alaska through the eyes of Doreen was an absolute delight.

Reading Queen of the Road brought me many smiles and moments of laughter. I wasn't crazy about the occasional use of profanity and even though I don't drink alcoholic beverages, I found humor in the names of the cocktails. There are numerous photos from the travels of Doreen and her bus-mates on the official Queen of the Road website. Beautiful photos from all over the country. You can also read her blog and watch travelogues which are quite interesting.
