Not too long ago, we awoke in the middle of the night to find our electricity off. When we walked out onto the deck off our bedroom, we could see that the darkness went on for miles.
"No worries" I said as I felt my way down the stairs and into the guestroom where I had flashlights and other emergency supplies in the closet. Well...after I felt around in the dark and found a flashlight, I discovered the batteries were old and the light was so very dim I could hardly see.
Again, "no worries" as I opened the door to the garage with my dimly lit light. I rummaged around the side of the car to the shelf where I knew our 72 hour backpacks were. I swiped the flashlights out of the packs, while trying my hardest not to think about the monsters lurking in the corners of the garage. I grabbed the bags batteries out of the refrigerator and grabbed the hard line telephone I had left at the bottom of the stairs on my way to the garage and with my arms full of supplies, went back up to our bedroom.
It should not have been that difficult!!
We now keep flashlights on either side of our bed. We also make sure all other flashlights in the house are in good working order. The electricity was back on within hours however, I thought we were prepared and we really weren't. We're fortunate this was only a rehearsal.
There are battery operated flashlights,
I keep a good flashlight in each of our 72 Hour Backpacks. When my flashlights are battery operated, I do not put the batteries in the flashlight until needed.

Emergency Prepardness is not only helpful after a hurricane, fire, tornado or earthquake. An illness, loss of a job, or even instability in the national economy are all good reason to be prepared.
