30 Day Organizational Challenge

I've decided to join in on The 30 day Organizational Challenge that is being hosted by Laura at I'm an Organizing Junkie. When we moved back to California (after a 2 year stay in Florida) it was easy to say, "I'll get organized when the kids are all moved out." You see, while we were living in Florida our oldest son and his family lived in our house. This was the perfect set-up as we didn't have to take all of our belongings with us or pay for a storage unit. I used a few of the 6 closets in the house and the third garage for storing items we left behind. Our son bought his own home several months ago and I have yet to clean out and organize the downstairs bedroom. It has literally become a huge unorganized "Black Hole" that I am mortified for anyone to see. My husband is even more mortified than I. (Those who know him can totally understand why) I really would like to say that these photos are "set-up" "fake" "staged" or simply "Make believe" but unfortunately I cannot. This is the real thing.
Directly off our front foyer is this pleasant little hallway to the guestroom.
As we get a bit closer you can begin to see the "Black Hole"
While taking photos of the "Black Hole" I saw several things I've been looking for.
The pile in front of the closet is preventing me from getting into the closet. The suitcase under the plastic bin has souvenirs from our road trip back to CA. The plastic bin is Halloween decorations we didn't use. Under the garment bags and lamp shade is a chair...I think.
On the dresser is the printer that "Mayflower" broke, the emergency land line phone, and the microscope that belongs in the box which is on the very top of the hutch. There's the talking globe, Skeletor, power travel adapters and Oh, my sewing shears. I was looking for those yesterday.
I can't even begin to list any of the things on the bed. Since April, if I didn't know where to put something it just went on the bed.
Gee, NY was looking for those black light bulb boxes the day after Halloween.
The biggest problem (besides the whole room) is I can't get around the bed anymore. In the corner is a box of card board bricks I plan to sell on eBay. The bright pink kid's booster seat on the floor is another Ebay sale. The 2 boxes with the Beverage Jars need to be safely stored in the closet. One is mine and the other I bought several months ago for my sister's birthday. (which is in December)
Looking back in the closet you can see all the boxes on the floor. I have shelf units that belong in there but right now the pile is preventing me from closing or opening the closet doors.
The clutter on the other side of the bed makes it difficult to get to the window or the lamp.
Wow, behind the bedroom door is a lamp minus the glass shade (thank you, Mayflower) my grout sealer and Pledge wipes I've been looking for and viola, my vacuum.
But hey...this gift for a friend's wedding is quite pretty, don't you think?!?

Good for you getting organized. I always say.... Dare to Dump It! Once you start tossing things out, it becomes fun!!!! Goodwill will thank you, also.

Boy, you sure have your work cut out for you! hee hee

We have a "black hole", too. It's so filled with stuff that you can barely open the door to the room!

Good luck in the challenge. It will be nice for you to get that room cleaned out. I know how it is. I have a room like that, too, where we just dump everything we don't know what to do with it. It's strange how easy a room can get cluttered up like that.
